Mariela Torres Recabarren
Chili (1969)Through her passion for ceramics, Mariela Torres (°1969, lives and works in Ghent) explores her Chilean roots. She likes to spend hours poring over books on historical South American civilisations such as those of the Mayas, Incas or Aztecs, for example, and prefers to work with lots of organic shapes and colours. Although she is generally keen to bring more colour into the world - because colour makes people happy, she herself attaches a specific meaning or feeling to each hue. Each of the ten sculptures was given its own character and appearance. For the names, Mariela Torres drew inspiration from the Easter Island sculptures. Besides her sculptural work, the Belgian-Chilean ceramist also creates more functional objects with strong sculptural qualities. With these, she managed to conquer Belgian hearts in no time. Driven by her love of experimentation and working with her hands, every day in the studio is a new adventure.
