Isaac Cordal

Spain (1974)

With his seemingly lovely miniature sculptures, Isaac Corcal (°1974, lives and works in Pontevedra/Spain) holds up a confrontational mirror to his viewers. In the series Cement Eclipses, Cordal portrays a balding, despondent-looking middle-aged man in a grey suit. By making the figurines look alike, Cordal questions the neoliberal straitjacket we are all forced into. Using imperfect locations like cables, wall cavities or other architectural remnants as a frame, Cordal shows the passage of time and our human decadence. Moreover, this tension between what is not yet and what will never be contributes to the dramatic nature of the tableaux. With his poetic sculptures, Cordal makes his audience think about our society of control, about the way work takes up all our time and about our disrupted connection with nature and thus our existence. Thanks to the dosed, ambiguous use of humour and irony, it is not always clear whether to laugh or just cry.
